A slate table comes apart into a frame, a bed in sections and a set of rails, and in a two flat or a three flat every one of those pieces goes up the rear staircase, because the front hall is narrow, shared, and usually not an option. That back stair is timber, open, often two or three flights of it, with a landing at each floor and a handrail on the drop side that sets the real width.

It is a good stair to work if it is sound and a bad one if it is not, and either way the landings are what decide the job. A landing deep enough to turn a bed section on is the difference between an hour and an afternoon. That measurement, more than the number of flights, is the useful thing to send with a quote request.

The alley behind is usually where a truck can actually stand, which is often better than the street out front. Worth saying whether there is alley access, because permit parking and a long carry from the kerb is the alternative.
